Where your treasure is, your heart will also be

Gospel (Mt 6,19-23) - At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: «Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; instead lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in or steal. Because where your treasure is, there your heart will also be. »The lamp of the body is the eye; therefore, if your eye is simple, your whole body will be luminous; but if your eye is evil, your whole body will be dark. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great will be the darkness!

The commentary on the Gospel by Monsignor Vincenzo Paglia

In our world there is a sort of dictatorship of materialism that requires us to submit to the law of consumption and accumulation of goods. The teaching of the Gospel is very clear in this regard: he who accumulates a lot is prey to a great love for things, he is moved by a passion that captivates the heart. This is why Jesus says: "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." The true treasure – continues Jesus – is where the heart is directed. It is necessary to cultivate the heart and make it grow according to the Gospel. The evangelical word, listened to with continuity and attention, must shape our actions and our feelings, forge a lifestyle far from the greed for possession and accumulation that Jesus compares to the rust that he consumes. In this case, more than consuming things, rust consumes the heart, feelings and even the very meaning of life. Accumulating treasures in heaven, however, means loving the Word and putting it into practice, letting ourselves be guided by that plan of love that is revealed to us and becoming diligent and joyful workers. It is God's great dream for the world. The sky, then, is not just a distant destination; heaven is life with the Lord, with brothers and with the poor. Whoever spends their life according to the indications of the Gospel accumulates treasures that will remain fixed in the heavens; not only will no one be able to steal them from the believer, but they will bear fruit abundantly.
