Gospel (Mt 9,32-38) - At that time, they presented Jesus with a mute demoniac. And after the demon was cast out, that dumb man began to speak. And the crowds, struck by amazement, said: "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!" But the Pharisees said: "He casts out demons by the prince of demons." Jesus traveled through all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, announcing the gospel of the Kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity. Seeing the crowds, he felt compassion for them, because they were tired and exhausted like sheep that have no shepherd. Then he said to his disciples: «The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few! Therefore pray to the Lord of the harvest to send workers into his harvest!

The commentary on the Gospel by Monsignor Vincenzo Paglia

The Gospel presents us with a "mute possessed", a sick person who could no longer speak. Jesus gives him back his speech. Today our cities are full of silent men and women because they don't know who to talk to, they have no one to turn to to present their questions, their anguish, their rights. Just think of the many elderly people who live increasingly alone as they get older. We are mute and deaf even when we have no one to ask us questions, someone who can give us back our speech, as Jesus did with that man. Yes, we need to hear the Gospel so we can speak again. So often we are actually silent because we are full of empty words. And anyone who allowed their heart to be touched by the Gospel also began to speak again, to pray, to exhort, to forgive and even to correct. And we too can express our amazement together with those crowds that surrounded Jesus: "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!". Jesus' compassion opens our eyes and allows us to see first of all the poor and the weak and to bend down to them. Unfortunately, there are still few who approach with compassion the crowds of this world who are "tired and exhausted like sheep who have no shepherd". And Jesus continues to say: «The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few!». There is a need to pray to the Father to send workers of mercy.
