Gospel (Lk 7,11-17) - At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain and his disciples and a large crowd traveled with him. When he was near the city gate, behold, a dead man, the only son of a widowed mother, was being carried to the tomb; and many people of the city were with her. Seeing her, the Lord had compassion and said to her: "Don't cry!". And as she approached she touched the coffin, while the bearers stopped. Then he said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to speak. And he gave it to his mother. They were all filled with fear and glorified God, saying: "A great prophet has arisen among us, and God has visited his people." The fame of these facts spread throughout Judea and throughout the region.

The commentary on the Gospel by Monsignor Vincenzo Paglia

A young man, the only child of a widowed mother, dies. For that mother, life is shattered. Every thread of hope appears definitively severed. Nothing is anymore possible for that son or for that mother, other than burying one and accompanying the other, consoling her for her pain. Jesus, seeing that funeral procession, is moved by that widowed mother who feels her life has been definitively cut short. The evangelist notes that Jesus, as soon as he saw his heartbroken mother, "was filled with great compassion". It is a great compassion, which leads him to make him the pain of that mother. There is a greatness in this feeling of Jesus that is today ignored and despised as a sign of weakness. But in the face of evil it is the only response that can change your life. Jesus immediately tells her not to cry, then walks towards the sedan chair and turns to the boy: «I say to you, get up!». Jesus speaks to him as if he were alive. There are many young people who, today, live as dead, that is, without hope for their future. The hope for a better world has been stolen from them. So often for them society is a stepmother. And they find themselves alone and lost in a world with no future, waiting for someone to stop and speak to them with words of life.
